Discover Playa Blanca

As the southernmost resort in Lanzarote, Playa Blanca has by far the best weather on the island. Making the average temperatures experienced there two or three degrees hotter than the resorts on the eastern coast. This difference is another good reason why Playa Blanca is becoming the most popular choice for holidaymakers.

Although the weather is not the only thing that the town has to its advantage. Because the location also brings visitors within easy access of some of the most beautiful beaches to be found in the whole of the Canary archipelago. Known collectively as the Playas de Papagayo, there are six white sand coves and bays, each with its own distinctive character and all are in pristine condition.

The beaches remain unspoiled due to the absence of development in their immediate vicinity and that they can only be reached by a dirt track, rather than a paved road. In addition, there are only two restaurant-cafés in close proximity, ensuring that there is not much risk of the area becoming litter-strewn or overcrowded.

The town of Playa Blanca itself has three very inviting golden beaches as well. In the form of Playa Flamingo, a palm-fringed bay with large stone groins protecting the water and creating ideal paddling conditions. Right in the centre of the town is Playa Blanca beach, which has a seafront promenade lined with restaurants and bars at its back. Whilst out towards the eastern side of the resort is Playa Dorada, with a wide sweep of sand in front of several four star hotels, such as the Princesa Yaiza.

The town has grown from a small fishing village, arranged around the ferry port and the church, into the holiday destination it is today. Much of its development has only happened in the last ten years, with the majority of accommodation comprising either quality four and five star hotels or private luxury villas. Making villas in Playa Blanca an ideal holiday choice, whilst illustrating the changing tastes of visitors, who these days are more likely to want a home from home experience in a villa or the pampering of a modern hotel.

For holidaymakers who like to get out and explore their environment, Playa Blanca offers an excellent base for visiting Lanzarote’s most popular tourist attraction – the Fire Mountains. The Timanfaya National Park is the place to see many of the dormant volcanoes that had such a disruptive effect on the island’s history. They erupted for six years continuously between 1730-36, covering a quarter of the island’s land mass with molten lava.

Today, visitors are driven round the eerie landscape on a coach tour that provides views of the spent cones, fissures and rock that looks like molten wax. The Park also has an amazing restaurant where food is cooked over the thermal heat rising from one of the cones.

Also not to be missed whilst staying in Playa Blanca, is the chance to visit the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura, which is only a twenty minute ferry crossing away. Where there is the Dunas National Park, also well worth visiting and made up of miles of white sand dunes, clearly visible from Lanzarote.
